About this tool
WebP is a modern image format that is usually 25-35% smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality, and it supports transparency and animation. This tool converts in both directions: drop a JPG or PNG to get a WebP, or drop a WebP to turn it back into a PNG or JPG for software that doesn't support WebP yet. The conversion runs with the Canvas API in your browser, so images are never uploaded. When converting to JPG, transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose.
Benefits & use cases
- Cut image weight on a website without a visible quality drop.
- Keep transparency while getting a smaller file than PNG.
- Convert WebP downloads into a format an older app can open.
- Batch your workflow: WebP for the web, JPG or PNG for everything else.
Frequently asked questions
Does my browser support WebP?
All current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari can create and read WebP. If your browser can't, the tool will show an error when saving.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The conversion is done entirely in your browser with the Canvas API.
Is WebP always smaller?
Usually, at the same quality. For very simple graphics the difference can be small, and lossless WebP of a photo can be larger than JPG.
Does converting to WebP lose quality?
Lossy WebP re-compresses the image like JPG does. Use a high quality setting, and start from the original rather than an already compressed file.
