Page numbers seem trivial until you're assembling a report with a cover page that shouldn't be numbered, or merging documents where numbering needs to continue from a previous file. Here's how to add page numbers properly, not just slap "1, 2, 3" on every page.
Add numbers in one pass
Add Page Numbers stamps a number onto every page of your PDF at once — pick the corner or edge position, the font size, and whether it reads just the number or "Page X of Y".
Choosing a starting number
If your document is part of a larger set — chapter 3 of a report that starts at page 45, for example — you can set a custom starting number instead of always beginning at 1. This matters for anything with a table of contents referencing page numbers across multiple files.
Skipping the cover page
Formal documents (theses, reports) often number the cover page and table of contents differently, or not at all. If your PDF has one, consider splitting it off with Split PDF first, numbering only the body, then merging the cover page back with Merge PDF.
Position and readability
Bottom-center or bottom-right are the most common, unbtrusive choices. Avoid placing numbers where a two-sided printed document's binding or hole-punch margin would cover them.
