Text Sorter

Sort lines alphabetically or numerically, ascending or descending.

Text Sorter

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

How to use

  1. 1Paste your lines into the input box.
  2. 2Choose ascending or descending and any options you need.
  3. 3Copy the sorted result.

About this tool

The Text Sorter arranges the lines of your text in alphabetical or numeric order, ascending or descending. Plain sorting compares lines as text, so "10" comes before "2" — turn on numeric sorting when your lines are numbers, prices or IDs and you want true numeric order instead. You can combine sorting with ignoring case, dropping blank lines and removing duplicates, so a messy pasted list can be cleaned and ordered in one pass instead of several separate tools.

Benefits & use cases

  • Alphabetise a glossary, bibliography or index.
  • Put a list of prices, scores or IDs into true numeric order.
  • Sort a spreadsheet column you've pasted in as plain text.
  • Reverse a list from newest-first to oldest-first, or vice versa.
  • Sort and deduplicate a list in a single step.

Frequently asked questions

How are numbers sorted by default?

As text, so "10" sorts before "2". Enable "Sort numbers by value" for true numeric order.

Which language rules are used for sorting?

Your browser's locale collation rules, which handle accented characters sensibly.

Can I sort by the second word or a specific column?

Not directly — this tool sorts by the whole line from the start. For column-based sorting, rearrange the text so the value you want to sort by comes first on each line.

Does sorting change the number of lines?

Only if you also enable "Remove empty lines" or "Remove duplicates" — otherwise every line you paste in comes back out, just reordered.
